Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 328In this 328th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Fairy Tale "SLEEPING BEAUTY".ONCE upon a time, long, long ago and far, far away, there lived a king and queen who had no children; and this they lamented very much. But one day, as the queen was walking by the side of the river, a little fish lifted its head out of the water, and said, "Your wish shall be fulfilled, and you shall soon have a daughter."What the little fish had foretold soon came to pass; and the Queen had a little girl who was so very beautiful that the king could not cease looking on her for joy, and determined to hold a great feast. So he invited not only his relations, friends, and neighbours, but also all the fairies, that they might be kind and good to his little daughter. Now there were thirteen fairies in his kingdom, and he had only twelve golden dishes for them to eat out of, so that he was obliged to leave one of the fairies without an invitation. This incensed the thirteenth fairy so much so, that one day she appeared in the Royal Court and placed a curse upon the daughter Beauty. What was the curse you ask? Did it come to pass and what effect did it have on the family? Well, to find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out!Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Abstract: THE following 38 Finnish children's stories cover almost all of the songs and runes contained in the Kalevala, the epic of the Finnish people in a simpler, story form. These stories will lead English speaking children into an hitherto unexplored region of the fairy world, for the folklore of Finland is the least known in the West.In these 38 stories T. M. Crawford's metrical translation of the Kalevala has been closely followed. As an introduction the first story in the volume is "Father Mikko" who has been chosen as the story-teller. Thereafter you will find stories like "Illmarinen Forges the Sampo", a classic Finnish tale, an illustration of which has been selected for the cover. Young readers will also find the story of "The Isle of Refuge", "Wainamoinen And Youkahainen", "Aino's Fate", "Wainamoinen's Search For Aino", "The Rainbow-Maiden", "Ilmarinen's Bride Of Gold"and many more. While some of the characters' names will, at first, be unfamiliar, but by the end of the book they will be as familiar as friends. If this volume may in any degree awake some interest in the Finnish people, the storyteller would be amply satisfied, for his objective will have been attained.

Abstract: Joseph Jacob's first volume—English Fairy—did not exhaust the scanty remains of traditional English folktales. He retained those he did not use and most of the 44 illustrated tales that appear in More English Fairy Tales had never before appeared in print. Many of these 44 tales were recorded verbatim from storytellers. Stories like Tattercoats, Yallery Brown, The Three Feathers, Sir Gammer Vans, A Pottle O' Brains, Old Mother Wiggle-Waggle and many, many more. Some will be familiar and others less so, but all are nonetheless captivating. In compiling More English Fairy Tales Joseph Jacobs flouted the Florklorist's creed, choosing to present stories that would fill children's imaginations "with bright trains of images", vividly painted princesses, Pied Pipers, pots of gold, giants, speaking cats, Kings, Hoybahs, wise men, washerwomen, and more overflow from this volume - all bound by the common threads of basic moral lessons. Academics of the day would say they are by no means in an authorised form, and even use a mix of archaic and colloquial English. Maybe so, but the effect is justified. In the times following Jacob's original printing in 1894, the literary establishment objected to the use of such archaic colloquialisms. However, these tales have been told for generations in a form that used local dialects and colloquial words for effect. This traditional form makes these stories all the richer in a modern setting. We invite you to curl up with this volume and be transported back in time to when England had a hundred or more local dialects—a time when the words Lawkamercyme and noddle were commonplace.10% of the publisher's profit from the sale from this book will be donated to Charities.=============TAGS: folklore, fairy, Tales, children, stories, bedtime, fables, illustrated, myths, legends, more English, England, ye old England, Pied Piper Hereafterthis, Golden Ball, My Own Self, Black Bull, Norroway, Yallery Brown, Three Feathers, Sir, Gammer Vans, Tom Hickathrift, Hedley Kow    , Gobborn Seer, Lawkamercyme, Tattercoats , Wee Bannock, Johnny Gloke, Coat o' Clay, The Three Cows , Blinded Giant, Scrapefoot, Pedlar of Swaffham, Old Witch, Three Wishes, Buried Moon, Son of Adam, Children in the Wood, Hobyahs, Pottle O' Brains, King of England, Three Sons, King John, Abbot of Canterbury, Rushen Coatie, King O' The Cats, Tamlane, Stars in the Sky, News, Paddock, Mousie, Ratton, Little Bull-Calf, wee, Mannie, Habetrot, Scantlie Mab , Old Mother Wiggle-Waggle, Catskin, Stupid's Cries, Lambton Worm, Wise men of Gotham, Princess of Canterbury

Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 311In this 311th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Fairy Tale "THE AXE, THE DRUM, THE BOWL, AND THE DIAMOND".ONCE upon a time, a long, long ago and far, far away, there was a poor young man who went out into the world to seek his fortune. He went aboard a ship sailing across the ocean; and after they had sailed for a year and a day, suddenly a great storm arose. The rain descended, and the wind blew, and it blew so hard and so wild, that the ship went miles out of her course, and the skipper could not tell where they were. And then, in the middle of the night, a great crash came, and the ship was dashed upon a reef. The waves beat and battered it, and turned it topsy-turvy, and the end of it was that every soul was drowned except the poor young man.The waves washed him ashore, more dead than alive, and on the shore he lay till next morning, when the sun warmed him and woke him up from his faint. He got up and looked about him, and wandered over the place, which he found was an island. It did not take him long to walk round it; and then he saw that it was a small island, and far as the eye could reach not another speck of land was to be seen. There were plenty of trees growing in the island, with fruit and flowers, bananas and cocoanuts, and springs of water; but on the trees were no birds, and no animals ran about on the ground. So he lived on the fruits and roots, and did the best he could. One day, to his great surprise, he saw a black thing in the sky; and, still more surprising, the black thing had no wings. Yet it was flying, and flew nearer and nearer, until he saw that it was a large wild pig. How could a pig fly through the air? He rubbed his eyes and looked again; yes, a pig it was beyond all doubt; and it flew closer and closer until it came to the island.Did the young man really see a flying pig? Once the pig landed, what did the young man do next? Did he manage to get off the island and where do the axe, the drum, the bowl, and the diamond come into the story? Well to find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out!Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Abstract: THIS book contains 20  Czech and Slovak folk and fairy tales translated and retold in English by Parker Fillmore, with excellent illustrations and decorations by Jan Matulka.Drawn from original Slavic sources, and chosen for their variety of subject and range of interest with tales like The Twelve Months, Zlatovlaska The Golden-Haired, The Shepherd's Nosegay, Smolicheck, The Nickerman's Wife, Batcha And The Dragon, Vitazko The Victorious and many more. Unlike stories from the Grimm brothers, here are fairy tales conceived with all the gorgeousness of the Slavic imagination; charming little nursery tales that might be told in nurseries the world over; folk tales illustrative of the wit of a canny people; and rollicking devil tales as surprising to the Anglo-Saxon imagination as they are entertaining. They are not in any sense academic translations, but vivid renditions by a man who, besides being a student of folklore, was an accomplished story-teller in his own right. The stories are further embellished by Jan Matulka's exquisite illustrations which capture the essence of the region's culture. Added to this Matulka commences each story with a vignette which have a distinct Picasso-esque style to them. So, get yourself a warm drink, snuggle in to a comfy chair and sit back and enjoy folklore and tales from the Heart of Europe.

Abstract: HEREIN you will find 23 Czech tales like THE TWELVE MONTHS, BOOTS, CLOAK, AND RING, SILLY JURA, SLEEPY JOHN, KOJATA, THE ENCHANTED PRINCESSES, NINE AT A BLOW and many more. Some of which are the Czech equivalent of perennial favourites and others will seem to be completely new and previously unread.THIS collection of 23 Czech folk tales is intended to exemplify the richness of spirit of the Czech race. While it may be argued that folk-tales are part of a common stock belonging to all European races, and even to many primitive peoples: these tales are all the richer, for the origins of the Czech Republic are in the ancient, central European kingdoms of Bohemia, Moravia and Czech Silesia, all of which have their unique and distinct flavour of folk and fairy tales.THE selection has been made from all sorts of folk tales, artistic and primitive alike; and yet two things are common to all of them: the moral tendency and a sense of humour. By this we do not mean morality in the earthy sense of retribution for evil. We mean that higher sort of morality which was the mainspring of European culture.IN recent times these tales have survived two world wars, the Prague Spring and fifty years of Communist (Russian) domination. During the years of communist oppression, all Warsaw Pact countries were expected to be mini-Russian states. During this time Russian language and culture dominated often to the detriment of local customs and culture. But through the power of folklore and folk tales the Czech people have been able to hold on to their national identity.SO, find a comfy chair, get yourself a hot drink and sit back and be prepared to be entertained. A warning: if you're reading these stories to children, just when you think you're finished, expect a tug at your sleeve and a simple request for "More please?"

Abstract: Originally published in French, Fairy Tales of the Slav Peasants and Herdsmen features 20 folk tales from the Slavic countries and territories. Very few of the 20 fairy tales included in this volume have been presented before in an English dress; this will doubtless enhance their value in the eyes of the young folk, for whom, principally, they are intended.Herein you will find tales like The Twelve Months - the story of Marouckla, who is set seemingly impossible tasks by her stepmother, but with the help of the Twelve Months overcomes and succeeds. The Lost Child – the story of a childless Noble couple who pray earnestly for a child. Their wish is granted with one condition – that that the child's feet never touched the earth until it was twelve years old…… Then you have the stories of The Sovereign of the Mineral Kingdom, Ohnivak, Tears of Pearls, Kinkach Martinko and many more. The Slav race is considerably diverse, both genetically and culturally. Famous Slavs in recent times are Pope John Paul II, the first human astronaut Yuri Gagarin, former President of Russia Mikhail Gorbachev and electrician/inventor Nikola Tesla. In earlier times Slavic groups also migrated as far North as Scandinavia, and constituted elements amongst the Vikings; whilst at the other geographic extreme, Slavic mercenaries fighting for the Byzantines and Arabs settled Asia Minor and even as far East as Syria.Fairy Tales of the Slav Peasants and Herdsmen was a French collection of the beloved fairy tales passed from generation to generation, and the stories were collected for preservation by Chodzko. Emily Harding, also known as Emily Harding Andrews, published her English translation in 1896, Harding was an illustrator for the woman's suffrage movement, and frequent illustrator of children's books. Fairy Tales of the Slav Peasants and Herdsmen was the first book she had translated and published under her own name. The accompanying 55 illustrations and headpieces speak for themselves, and are what might have been expected from the artist of her calibre. So sit back in a comfy chair with a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy these forgotten tales, lost to Western readers for over 100 years.10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities by the Publisher,

Abstract: The book containing 7 Armenian legends is the result of a study conducted by Louis A. Boettiger which have been selected from a larger mass of material.Of particular interest is the Legend of Haik or Hayk. In the account by Moses of Chorene, Hayk emigrated from Babylon to the region near Mount Ararat after Titanid Bel made himself king over all. Considering this occurred in circa 2500BC and that Hayk had an extended household of over 300, moving his hosehold a distance of 1,160km/720 miles is a significant undertaking. However, Titanid Bel did not like this snub and after refusing to return, sent an army to recapture or kill Hayk. The two armies, if Hayk's force can be called an army, met on the shores of Lake Van. During the battle Hayk slew Bel with a nearly impossible shot using a long bow, sending the king's forces into disarray. Hayk named the site of the battle Hayots Dzor in current day Turkey. It is out of this victory that the nation of Armenia was born.Herein you will find the legends of:The Legend Of Haic, or Hayk,The Legend Of Ara And Semiramis, The Legend Of Vahakn,Legends Of Artasches And Artavasd,Legends Of The Conversion To Christianity,Legends Of Abgar, Thaddeus, And St. BartholomewLegends Of Rhipsime And GregoryAlso included is information on the localities of the legends, in particular - Ararat, Khor-Virap and Erzerum which has enable Boettiger to place each legend in the setting from which it originated.10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities by the Publisher.=============KEYWORDS/TAGS: Armenia, folklore, legends, myths, Haic, Hayk, Ara And Semiramis,  Vahakn, King, Artasches, Artavasd, Conversion To Christianity, Abgar, Thaddeus, St. Bartholomew, Rhipsime, Gregory, Titanid Bel, Lake Van, Mount Ararat, Moses of Chorene, Haykashen, Haykashen, Battle of Giants, Navasard, Julamerk, Dastakert, Gerezmank, martyr, Haykaberd, Haykashen, Taron

Abstract: This book has been especially re-published to raise funds for the BBC's Children in Need Appeal. The stories herein were originally published over a century ago. Some will be familiar fare and others less familiar, but all are entertaining and appealing nonetheless. The 19 illustrated stories in this volume are:The Sleeping Beauty In The WoodPrince Hyacinth And The Dear Little PrincessCinderella Or The Little Glass SlipperEast Of The Sun And West Of The MoonRumpelstiltzkinThe Tale Of A Youth Who Set Out To Learn  What Fear WasLovely IlonkaBeauty And The BeastLucky LuckWhy The Sea Is SaltThe Master Cat Or Puss In BootsThe Six SwansThe Prince And The DragonThe Dragon Of The NorthLittle WildroseThe NixyThe Glass MountainFairer-Than-A-FairyThe White DuckThe words 'Fairy Tales' must be taken to include tales in which something 'fairy', something extraordinary occurs -- fairies, giants, dwarfs, speaking animals. One cannot imagine a child saying, 'Tell me a folk-tale', or 'Another nursery tale, please, grandma'.  It must also be taken to cover tales in which something magical happens. Mostly it is the comical stupidity of some of the actors, as is so common in moral tales. In buying this book you will be giving in more than one way. Once to the Children in Need appeal and again, to yourself, as you read and enjoy stories not read for many a year. But should you perchance happen to read these stories to your children, nieces and nephews or grand-children, you will be giving yet again. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the appeal. So take some time out and travel back to a period before television, or even radio for that matter, when families would gather around a crackling and spitting hearth and granddad or grandma  or an uncle or aunt would delight and captivate their audience with stories passed on to them from their mothers, fathers and grandparents.===============KEYWORDS/TAGS: Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children's stories, bedtime, fables, lore, Children in Need, Appeal, sleeping beauty, in the wood, prince hyacinth, little princess, Cinderella, little glass slipper, east of the sun, west of the moon, rumpelstiltzkin, youth, learn  what fear is, lovely ilonka, beauty, beast, lucky luck, sea, salt, master cat, puss in boots, six swans, prince, dragon, north, little wildrose, nixy, glass mountain, fairer, fairy, white duck, queen, king, white horse, town, village, travel, witch,

Abstract: The saga of Gunnlaug the Worm-Tongue and Raven the Skald, composed in the 13th century, relates the story of two Icelandic poets Gunnlaugr Ormstunga and Hrafn Önundarson, and their competition for the love of Helga the Fair, daughter of Þorsteinn Egilsson and granddaughter of Egill Skallagrímsson. The story opens with a prophetic dream of two eagles fighting over a swan, prefiguring the love triangle in the story. The rivalry is initially fought using verse, but later with weapons, when Gunnlaug challenges Hrafn to a holmgang -- a duel, the recognised Norse way of settling disputes. The narrative follows Gunnlaugr and is sympathetic towards him as it describes his ambitious career as a court poet across Scandinavia and the British Isles. The saga has similarities to earlier sagas of poets, such as Kormáks saga and Bjarnar saga, but it is more refined and elegant with strong characterization and emotional impact. Long considered a masterpiece, the saga is often read by new students of Old Norse literature.William Morris is normally thought of as a fantasy precursor of Tolkien, having written The Wood Beyond the World among other works. But he was also a translator, along with Eiríkr Magnússon, of more than just a few Norse Sagas. Originally written in the old Icelandic language, considered to be the closest tongue to that spoken by the Vikings, Gunnlaug the Worm-Tongue and Raven the Skald is but one of those efforts.=================TAGS: Viking Saga, Norse, Norway, Gunnlaug, Worm-Tongue, Raven The Skald, Iceland, Greenland, Thorstein Egilson, Kin, Dream, Birth, Fostering, Helga The Fair, Raven, Vow, Faring, Abroad, East, West, Ireland, Quarrel, Swedish King, Wife, Abide Away, Landing, Wedding, Skaney, Kings Cloak, Two Foes, Fight, Dingness, News, Death Of Helga

Abstract: This book brings together 10 stories about legendary towers from around the world. Herein you will find stories and tales of towers like THE STORY TOLD BY THE KEEPER OF THE PHAROS (Egyptian), AEOLUS AND THE TOWER OF THE WINDS (Greece), THE MOON THAT SHONE ON THE PORCELAIN PAGODA (China), THE DRAGON OF GHENT (Belgium), THE LEPRECHAUN OF ARDMORE TOWER (Ireland) and more.Since ancient times towers have made a poetic appeal. Towers of many kinds, in all ages and in all countries, have met varying needs. There have been watchtowers, cathedral towers, clock towers, bell towers, towers to commemorate victories, towers to honour the living and towers to celebrate the dead. Around many of the towers, legends have clung - some of these legends are very well known. Towers will always stand midway between fact and poetry, the legends relating to them, more often than not, look in these two directions. The Bible tells of a remote time when men journeyed from the East and found a plain in the land of Shinar. . . ."And they said to one another, 'Come, let us build us a city, and a tower whose top may reach heaven.'" Centuries after the building of the Tower of Babel, an Arab poet, El Deraoui, wrote of another tower, the Pharos, the great lighthouse off the northern coast of Egypt, "On its height a dome enshadowed me and thence I saw my friends the stars. I thought the sea below me was a cloud and that I had set up my tent in the midst of the heavens."A percentage of the net sale from this book will be donated to charities.

The Anansi tales are believed to have originated in the Ashanti tribe in Ghana. (The word Anansi is Akan and means, simply, spider.) They later spread to other Akan groups and then to the West Indies, Suriname, and the Netherlands Antilles. On Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire he is known as Nanzi, and his wife as Shi Maria. He is also known as Ananse, Kwaku Ananse, and Anancy; and in the Southern United States he has evolved into Aunt Nancy. He is a spider, but often acts and appears as a man. The story of Anansi is akin to the Coyote or Raven the trickster found in many Native American cultures.
