Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 404In this 404th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Swahili Fairy Tale "THE ONE-HANDED GIRL".A dying man asked his children which they would have: his property or his blessing. His son wanted his property, and his daughter his blessing. He died. Soon after, his wife died as well, and again, the son wanted her property and the daughter her blessing. She died. The brother left his sister only a pot and a vessel, but people borrowed her pot and gave her corn for it, so the sister survived. One day, she had a pumpkin seed and planted it, and grew pumpkins as well. Her brother, envious, stole her pot and mortar, but she was able to replace them by selling her pumpkins. Her brother's wife sent a slave to buy one, and the sister gave her one for free, though there were few left, so the wife sent another slave, and this one the sister had to send away, because there were none left. The wife wept and told the brother that his sister would sell pumpkins to other people but not to her. Enraged, the brother went to cut the sister's pumpkin patch down. His sister told him that if he did, he would cut off her hand with it, but putting her hand on it did her no good: he cut it off while chopping down the vines. Then he sold the house she lived in and cast her out.Well, what happened next you ask…? Well many things happened. There were some strange, some silly and some serious occurrences. Abstract: Out in the Atlantic Ocean, almost due west of the Pillars of Hercules, lie the Azore Islands. It is just possible that the Azores are all that remain of the fabled, ancient city of Atlantis; for how else would such a small chain of islands end up with such a rich tapestry of folklore and fairy tales. It is here that Elsie Spicer Eells found these tales and recorded them for us to enjoy. In this volume of 34 illustrated children's stories you will find tales like:  Princess Bluegreen of the Seven Cities, The Islands of Flowers, Why Dogs Sniff, The Princess Who Lost Her Rings, The Master Of Magic, St. Anthony's Godchild, The Seven Enchanted Princes and many more. These stories will not be found in any traditional western fairy tale books. This makes these stories unique which will take children, and lovers of folklore, on a journey as yet untrodden by the majority. So, we invite you to curl up with this unique sliver of Antlantean fairy culture, not seen in print for almost a century; and immerse yourself in the tales and fables of yesteryear.----------------------------TAGS: fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children's stories, children's stories, bygone era, fairydom, fairy land, classic stories, children's bedtime stories, Princess bluegreen of the seven cities, islands of flowers, Why dogs sniff, Longstaff, pinepuller, rockheaver, table, sifter pinchers, Linda branca and her mask, Fresh figs, Peter-of-the-pigs, princess who lost her rings, master of magic, St. Anthony's godchild, Trouble, young, little maid who was wise, Manoel littlebean, necklace of pearls, daughter of the king of naples, Maria-of-the-forest, seven enchanted princes, listening king, José the beast slayer, princess of the lost island, Why the alvéloa bird received a blessing, Why the codorniz bird received a curse, Outside the door like the mother of st. Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 408In this 408th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the African Tale of "Sai The Panther".In about the year 1824 or so, years ago two little panthers were deserted by their mother in one of the forests of Ashanti (now Ghana). They were too young to get food for themselves, and would probably have died had they not been found by a passing traveller, and taken by him to the palace as a present to the king. Here they lived and played happily for several weeks. One day the elder and larger, whose name was Saï, gave his brother, in fun, such a dreadful squeeze that, without meaning to, he suffocated him. This frightened the king, who did not care to keep such a powerful pet about him, and he gave him away to Mr. Hutchison, an English gentleman, who was a sort of governor for the English traders settled in that part of Africa. Mr Hutchinson arranged to have Sai shipped to England.Well, what happened to Sai you ask…? Well many things happened, but out just what happened, you will have to download and read this story to find out!BUY ANY OF THE BABA INDABA CHILDREN'S STORIES by following this link https://goo.gl/5ZcmPP10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.INCLUDES LINKS TO DOWNLOAD 8 FREE STORIESEach issue also has a "WHERE IN THE WORLD - LOOK IT UP" section, where young readers are challenged to look up a place on a map somewhere in the world. Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 410In this 410th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Brazilian Fairy Tale "THE STORY OF THE YARA".The Brazilian Yara, also called a water-witch, is said to lure young men by her marvellous singing, much as the mermaids on the Rhine's Lorelei  Rock would lure sailors to run their barges aground with their singing. After seeing her, the youth would become melancholy and would haunt the river day and night where he had first beheld her. His friends and people would remonstrate with and warn him of the enchantress "whose smile is the smile of death", but the youth, be he chief or tribesman would not listen and he would go to the river. There the beautiful being would appear and as he rushed to embrace her the waters would divide, and the two would disappear, never to be seen again."In this story, the young lover Alonzo struggles to heed the warnings of his beloved fiancée, Julia, and stay away from the river where he encountered the Yara. The fact that he has seen the Yara causes him to act differently, to even laugh differently, and despite his intentions to listen to Julia, he is tempted back to the river. Julia, not at all happy with this situation decides to take action……..What happened next you ask? Does true love conquer all? Well, to find the answers to this and other questions  you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out? This is a delightful story. Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 407In this 407th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Fairy Tale "Oh If I Could But Shiver".A long time ago a father had two sons – the elder was clever and the younger stupid. Sometimes of an evening, tales were told by the fireside which made one shudder, and the listeners exclaimed, "Oh, it makes us shiver!" The younger son could never understand this saying for he had never shivered. Then the time came for the youth to learn a trade. The father confided to the parish sexton[1] who said he could teach him how to shiver and to send him over to his place. Working for the sexton, he faithfully undertook the duties assigned to him. One night he was awoken late into the night and told to go and rung the church bell. On arriving in the belfry he was about to ring the bell when a white figure appeared. The boy called out to the ghostly figure who simply stood and stared. After the incident things began to happen? But what happened next you ask…? Well many things happened, some silly and funny; and some serious. And did I hear tell of a Princess as well? Abstract: The saga of Gunnlaug the Worm-Tongue and Raven the Skald, composed in the 13th century, relates the story of two Icelandic poets Gunnlaugr Ormstunga and Hrafn Önundarson, and their competition for the love of Helga the Fair, daughter of Þorsteinn Egilsson and granddaughter of Egill Skallagrímsson. The story opens with a prophetic dream of two eagles fighting over a swan, prefiguring the love triangle in the story. The rivalry is initially fought using verse, but later with weapons, when Gunnlaug challenges Hrafn to a holmgang -- a duel, the recognised Norse way of settling disputes. The narrative follows Gunnlaugr and is sympathetic towards him as it describes his ambitious career as a court poet across Scandinavia and the British Isles. The saga has similarities to earlier sagas of poets, such as Kormáks saga and Bjarnar saga, but it is more refined and elegant with strong characterization and emotional impact. Long considered a masterpiece, the saga is often read by new students of Old Norse literature.William Morris is normally thought of as a fantasy precursor of Tolkien, having written The Wood Beyond the World among other works. But he was also a translator, along with Eiríkr Magnússon, of more than just a few Norse Sagas. Originally written in the old Icelandic language, considered to be the closest tongue to that spoken by the Vikings, Gunnlaug the Worm-Tongue and Raven the Skald is but one of those efforts.=================TAGS: Viking Saga, Norse, Norway, Gunnlaug, Worm-Tongue, Raven The Skald, Iceland, Greenland, Thorstein Egilson, Kin, Dream, Birth, Fostering, Helga The Fair, Raven, Vow, Faring, Abroad, East, West, Ireland, Quarrel, Swedish King, Wife, Abide Away, Landing, Wedding, Skaney, Kings Cloak, Two Foes, Fight, Dingness, News, Death Of Helga

One cannot imagine a child saying, 'Tell me a folk-tale', or 'Another nursery tale, please, grandma'.  It must also be taken to cover tales in which something magical happens. Mostly it is the comical stupidity of some of the actors, as is so common in moral tales. In buying this book you will be giving in more than one way. Once to the Children in Need appeal and again, to yourself, as you read and enjoy stories not read for many a year. But should you perchance happen to read these stories to your children, nieces and nephews or grand-children, you will be giving yet again. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the appeal. So take some time out and travel back to a period before television, or even radio for that matter, when families would gather around a crackling and spitting hearth and granddad or grandma  or an uncle or aunt would delight and captivate their audience with stories passed on to them from their mothers, fathers and grandparents.===============KEYWORDS/TAGS: Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children's stories, bedtime, fables, lore, Children in Need, Appeal, sleeping beauty, in the wood, prince hyacinth, little princess, Cinderella, little glass slipper, east of the sun, west of the moon, rumpelstiltzkin, youth, learn  what fear is, lovely ilonka, beauty, beast, lucky luck, sea, salt, master cat, puss in boots, six swans, prince, dragon, north, little wildrose, nixy, glass mountain, fairer, fairy, white duck, queen, king, white horse, town, village, travel, witch,

Abstract: The book containing 7 Armenian legends is the result of a study conducted by Louis A. Boettiger which have been selected from a larger mass of material.Of particular interest is the Legend of Haik or Hayk. In the account by Moses of Chorene, Hayk emigrated from Babylon to the region near Mount Ararat after Titanid Bel made himself king over all. Considering this occurred in circa 2500BC and that Hayk had an extended household of over 300, moving his hosehold a distance of 1,160km/720 miles is a significant undertaking. However, Titanid Bel did not like this snub and after refusing to return, sent an army to recapture or kill Hayk. The two armies, if Hayk's force can be called an army, met on the shores of Lake Van. During the battle Hayk slew Bel with a nearly impossible shot using a long bow, sending the king's forces into disarray. Hayk named the site of the battle Hayots Dzor in current day Turkey. It is out of this victory that the nation of Armenia was born.Herein you will find the legends of:The Legend Of Haic, or Hayk,The Legend Of Ara And Semiramis, The Legend Of Vahakn,Legends Of Artasches And Artavasd,Legends Of The Conversion To Christianity,Legends Of Abgar, Thaddeus, And St. BartholomewLegends Of Rhipsime And GregoryAlso included is information on the localities of the legends, in particular - Ararat, Khor-Virap and Erzerum which has enable Boettiger to place each legend in the setting from which it originated.10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities by the Publisher.=============KEYWORDS/TAGS: Armenia, folklore, legends, myths, Haic, Hayk, Ara And Semiramis,  Vahakn, King, Artasches, Artavasd, Conversion To Christianity, Abgar, Thaddeus, St. Bartholomew, Rhipsime, Gregory, Titanid Bel, Lake Van, Mount Ararat, Moses of Chorene, Haykashen, Haykashen, Battle of Giants, Navasard, Julamerk, Dastakert, Gerezmank, martyr, Haykaberd, Haykashen, Taron

Abstract: Joseph Jacob's first volume—English Fairy—did not exhaust the scanty remains of traditional English folktales. He retained those he did not use and most of the 44 illustrated tales that appear in More English Fairy Tales had never before appeared in print. Many of these 44 tales were recorded verbatim from storytellers. Stories like Tattercoats, Yallery Brown, The Three Feathers, Sir Gammer Vans, A Pottle O' Brains, Old Mother Wiggle-Waggle and many, many more. Some will be familiar and others less so, but all are nonetheless captivating. In compiling More English Fairy Tales Joseph Jacobs flouted the Florklorist's creed, choosing to present stories that would fill children's imaginations "with bright trains of images", vividly painted princesses, Pied Pipers, pots of gold, giants, speaking cats, Kings, Hoybahs, wise men, washerwomen, and more overflow from this volume - all bound by the common threads of basic moral lessons. Academics of the day would say they are by no means in an authorised form, and even use a mix of archaic and colloquial English. Maybe so, but the effect is justified. In the times following Jacob's original printing in 1894, the literary establishment objected to the use of such archaic colloquialisms. However, these tales have been told for generations in a form that used local dialects and colloquial words for effect. This traditional form makes these stories all the richer in a modern setting. We invite you to curl up with this volume and be transported back in time to when England had a hundred or more local dialects—a time when the words Lawkamercyme and noddle were commonplace.10% of the publisher's profit from the sale from this book will be donated to Charities.=============TAGS: folklore, fairy, Tales, children, stories, bedtime, fables, illustrated, myths, legends, more English, England, ye old England, Pied Piper Hereafterthis, Golden Ball, My Own Self, Black Bull, Norroway, Yallery Brown, Three Feathers, Sir, Gammer Vans, Tom Hickathrift, Hedley Kow    , Gobborn Seer, Lawkamercyme, Tattercoats , Wee Bannock, Johnny Gloke, Coat o' Clay, The Three Cows , Blinded Giant, Scrapefoot, Pedlar of Swaffham, Old Witch, Three Wishes, Buried Moon, Son of Adam, Children in the Wood, Hobyahs, Pottle O' Brains, King of England, Three Sons, King John, Abbot of Canterbury, Rushen Coatie, King O' The Cats, Tamlane, Stars in the Sky, News, Paddock, Mousie, Ratton, Little Bull-Calf, wee, Mannie, Habetrot, Scantlie Mab , Old Mother Wiggle-Waggle, Catskin, Stupid's Cries, Lambton Worm, Wise men of Gotham, Princess of Canterbury

Abstract: THE FROG PRINCE and Other Stories is three children's stories for the price of one. This book was published after a series of 17 colour illustrations by Walter Crane was put on public display. They are recreated for you in this book with the stories in their original form.THE FROG PRINCE; is an excellent story to teach children the importance of keeping their promises no matter how distasteful they may seem. It also teaches the moral of "Every Cloud has a Silver Lining".In the tale, a spoiled princess reluctantly befriends the Frog Prince whom she met after dropping a gold ball into a pond. The princess makes a promise she does not intend to keep. The frog visits the Princess in her father's palace and holds her to account. The King, the Princesses' father, an honourable man, insists the princess keep her promise. Reluctantly she does and the frog magically transforms into a handsome prince.PRINCESS BELLE-ETOILE is a French literary fairy tale written by Madame d'Aulnoy. A queen, reduced to poverty, started selling sauces to support herself and her three daughters. One day, an old woman came to them and begged a meal. They fed her, and the woman, being a fairy, promised that the next time they wished something without thinking of her, it would come true. For a long time, they could not make a wish without thinking of her. One day, the king came by. The oldest daughter, Roussette, said that if she married the king's admiral, she would make sails for all his ships; the 2nd, Brunette, that if she married the king's brother, she would make him lace enough to fill a castle; the 3rd, Blondine, that if she married the king, she would bear him two sons and a daughter, who would have golden chains about their necks and stars on their foreheads, and jewels would fall from their hair.A favourite of the King repeated their words to him, who summoned the sisters, and soon they were married. A splendid wedding feast was laid on, served on golden dishes. But that's not where the story ends………….ALADDIN AND THE WONDERFUL LAMP is a well-known Middle Eastern folk tale and was a late addition to "1001 Arabian Nights."Aladdin is an impoverished youth dwelling in a city in China. He is recruited by a sorcerer from the Maghreb (Sahara), He convinced Aladdin and his mother of his good will by pretending to set up the lad as a merchant. The sorcerer's motive is to persuade young Aladdin to retrieve a wonderful oil lamp from a booby-trapped cave. The sorcerer double-crosses him, and Aladdin finds himself trapped in the cave. Aladdin manages to escape with the lamp and return to his mother. When his mother tries to clean the lamp, so they can sell it, a second far more powerful genie appears who is bound to do their bidding. With the aid of the genie, Aladdin becomes rich and powerful and marries the sultan's daughter, after magically foiling her marriage to the vizier's son. The genie builds Aladdin and his bride a wonderful palace, far more magnificent than the sultan's. But that's not the end of the story – is it?You'll have to download these three tales to find out just how these stories end.

Abstract: The Sagas, of which this tale is one, were composed for the men who have left their mark in every corner of Europe. There is no page of modern history in which the influence of the Vikings and their conquests have not had an effect -- Russia, Turkey, Greece, Palestine, Sicily, the coasts of Africa, Southern Italy, France, the Spanish Peninsula, England, Scotland, Ireland, and every rock and island round them, have been visited at one time or another by the men of Scandinavia, and their influence is still being felt today. This saga paints a picture of Icelandic society. But the society presented is not one of pastoral simplicity and repose. The actors within were real men and women and the events portrayed actually occurred - for this is a true story. Bloodshed and violence are common and Viga-Glum, or "Murdering Glum," the hero of this story, is not by any means a perfect character, even when measured by the standards of the time in which he lived. A time when a man's standing in the community was dictated by courage and his wealth, the author tells us that for twenty years he was the first man in Eyjafirth, and for twenty years more there was no better man there. Viga-Glum is described as one who was naturally indolent, shy, and moody; but when he could be brought to act, his courage and determination were indomitable. When he had to achieve a purpose he was thoroughly unscrupulous; neither blood nor false oaths stood in his way - just what one would expect from a Viking. The finishing touch to this part of his character is added by the peculiarity, that whenever he was intent on slaying a man, he was apt to be seized with a fit of uncontrollable laughter which ended in tears. So join us in this ancient tale of love, lust, honour, murder, Beserkers, romance and damsels in distress. This book has been especially republished to raise funds for charities.TAGS: Viking, Norse, Saga, Action, Adventure, Iceland, Norway, Viga Glum, Bloodshed, violence, Murdering Glum, courage, wealth, Eyjafirth, indolent, shy, moody, champion, determination, beserker, romance, damsel in distress, rescue, knight in shining armor

Abstract: Once upon a time, a long, long time ago and far, far away, in Japan it was early spring on the coast of Suruga. A rose-tinged cloud from heaven had fallen softly on the branches of a cherry tree. Save for the lap of the sea, there was silence on that remote shore.A far-off sound became audible: it might be the song of falling waters, it might be the voice of the awakening wind, it might be the melody of the clouds. Slowly, imperceptibly, the music came nearer.Above the lofty heights of Mount Fujiyama a snow-white cloud floated earthwards. Nearer and nearer came the music. A low clear voice could be heard chanting a lay that breathed of the peace and tranquillity of the moonlight. The fleecy cloud was borne towards the shore. For one moment it seemed to rest upon the sand, and then it melted away.By the sea stood a glistening maiden. In her hand she carried a heart-shaped instrument, and, as her fingers touched the strings, she sang a heavenly song. She wore a robe of feathers, white and spotless as the breast of the wild swan. Birds flocked around her; they perched on her shoulder, and rubbed their soft heads against her cheek. She stroked them gently and they flew away full of joy. The maiden hung her robe of feathers on a pine branch, and went to bathe in the sea.So why had the beautiful maiden come to earth? What was her purpose? Was she brining a message or was she here to just watch and listen?  Well to find out why she had fallen to earth, you'll have to download this story and find out for yourself!Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Abstract: This book brings together 10 stories about legendary towers from around the world. Herein you will find stories and tales of towers like THE STORY TOLD BY THE KEEPER OF THE PHAROS (Egyptian), AEOLUS AND THE TOWER OF THE WINDS (Greece), THE MOON THAT SHONE ON THE PORCELAIN PAGODA (China), THE DRAGON OF GHENT (Belgium), THE LEPRECHAUN OF ARDMORE TOWER (Ireland) and more.Since ancient times towers have made a poetic appeal. Towers of many kinds, in all ages and in all countries, have met varying needs. There have been watchtowers, cathedral towers, clock towers, bell towers, towers to commemorate victories, towers to honour the living and towers to celebrate the dead. Around many of the towers, legends have clung - some of these legends are very well known. Towers will always stand midway between fact and poetry, the legends relating to them, more often than not, look in these two directions. The Bible tells of a remote time when men journeyed from the East and found a plain in the land of Shinar. . . ."And they said to one another, 'Come, let us build us a city, and a tower whose top may reach heaven.'" Centuries after the building of the Tower of Babel, an Arab poet, El Deraoui, wrote of another tower, the Pharos, the great lighthouse off the northern coast of Egypt, "On its height a dome enshadowed me and thence I saw my friends the stars. I thought the sea below me was a cloud and that I had set up my tent in the midst of the heavens."A percentage of the net sale from this book will be donated to charities.
